The advent of smart and shared transportation systems, spanning from automated shuttles to electric scooters, is rapidly changing mobility and the face of our downtowns. From creating loading zones for rideshare pick-ups, finding space for expanded bike share docks, and defining micro-mobility parking zones, to re-purposing travel lanes, designing shared spaces, managing increased shipping and deliveries, and removing parking requirements, downtowns across the country are grappling with new challenges in creative ways. While solutions vary and evolve daily, one element is consistent among all: curbside access.
In this webinar, we will discuss how some downtowns are creatively managing this critical transition from higher-speed street mobility to low-speed front-door sidewalks, with particular focus on communities enumerating the tremendous transactional value of efficient turn-over.
With a potential thirty-fold increase in person-trips accessing buildings from each curbside parking space, Sidewalk Labs’ plan for Toronto’s waterfront represents an amazing opportunity to re-invent public space, shift trips away from private cars, and dramatically reduce parking supplies. Chicago is taking this concept to the next step, framing a technology solution for existing curbs that anticipates substantial new municipal revenues and capacity for denser development with less traffic.
